Community Support Rises as SNAP Pause Impacts Kansas City Families

Kansas City Organizations Step Up to Support Families During SNAP Pause
As SNAP benefits remain in limbo during the ongoing government shutdown, Kansas City organizations and local businesses are stepping up to help families make ends meet.
On Monday, LM2 Construction provided $300 grocery gift cards to 20 families across the metro, allowing parents to stock up on essentials without worry. “We’re filling up baskets for moms, for seniors that have kids,” said Latasha McCall, owner of LM2 Construction. “Each mom can get whatever they want.”
For recipients like Olivia Holmes, a mother recovering from back surgery, the gesture came at the perfect time. “This will help a lot,” she said while shopping for her five-year-old son’s favorite foods.
The relief effort extends beyond LM2. Hy-Vee and Cosentino’s grocery stores are offering free meals for children 12 and under this week, with discounted options for accompanying adults. Participating Cosentino’s locations include Brookside Market, Blue Hawk Market, Sun Fresh, and Price Chopper stores throughout the Kansas City metro.
McCall emphasized that while no one knows when benefits will resume, the community’s support ensures families don’t go hungry. “Kids are innocent—they don’t understand what’s going on with the government, but they do understand when they’re not going to get a meal.”
